  • Our princess celebrates her engagment

10858_169679232822_618662822_2944306_3374536_n.jpg This is our baby and her Prince!

We've just returned from KC where we spent the weekend celebrating the engagement.

We could not have asked for a better weekend!

We drove Thursday arriving around 8pm ... just in time to visit with DocRoc and FutureTeacher (which I will need to change in Jan --woohoo) for a bit before they headed to bed.

Friday while the kids were at work, we spent the day with my folks.  They aren't well.  Loml and I had made a huge pot of turkey/noodle soup and brought it to share with them.

I scored some super awesome deals at the thrift store where FTs BFF works... Anne Taylor slacks, Sweaters and tops some with the tags still there -- in my new size 8

Friday after work they joined us and we went to dinner with Grandma and Grandpa

Then - back to the Doc's place to wait for DocLoveOfHisLife (she is doing her residency in Wichita)... the 5 of us made our way to Power and Lights (A swanky club/restaurant area) where we met Price Charming... with his folks, bro&wife and my niece (maid of honor) joined us as well.  It was an uber good time.

Sat we met PC&family on the plaza and had lunch at buca di beppo where we dined at the big table in the kitchen (our favorite) ... then we all (PC/FT, DR/DLOHL, PCs folks/bro&wife...loml and I) walked around the plaza and shopped and chatted and just enjoyed the beautiful sunny day

His family is wonderful and we really enjoyed spending time and sharing stories!

Then some errands and a trip to see PCs place (he is quite good with the decor)... then back to freshen and off to the ENGAGEMENT PARTY

It was at Coach's (where FT still picks up shifts on occasion)... appetizers and drinks with the wedding party, family and a few close friends

They had framed pictures of them sitting around and we were free to pick a fav and take it home.  Also FT (in honor of her prince giving her a beautiful ring) gave us all ring pops... our own gemstone ring

  • My week in review...

My week was crazy... it is the time of year when we hire and hire and hire for our seasonal work ... over 3000 people will be hired by mid Dec and be done by mid january.  It's like a freight train ride I assume.

my main focus is employee relations!  I have a staffing manager who oversees a team to do all the screening and hiring - I have a training manager who makes sure everyone is orientated and trained.

The missing piece ... employee relations.  That is my speciality .. what I love most about HR and this time of year I am IT and handling lots of issues.

    • Someone brought a gun to work - thinking of harming himself.  We called the -police and no one harmed anyone and he will not return...
    • We had a long time maintenance ticking time bomb explode enough or me to say NO MORE... he has taken is discharge well this far.
    • I discovered a manager who as having folks work off the clock and save up the elusive comp time (which really does not exist.

Now ... everyone understands they are paid for the hours they perform work.... and judged on the quality of work performed.

  • Culinary concoctions

I was in a funk yesterday - didn't workout ... had a pity party for my struggle to lose these last few pounds.  Today I shook it off and went back to the gym to reclaim my mojo.

I have finished my prep for the week -- it netted:

    • Anchovy & Garlic faux hummus
    • Chipotle pepper faux hummus
    • steel cut oats with brown splenda and cinnamon extract
    • yogurt ranch dressing
    • blackbean and pumpkin curried soup
    • 10 pam size bags of vege snacks and 5 rick size bags
    • broccoli cut and cleaned for a side dish
    • cauliflower cut and cleaned for a side dish

Tonight I am making wasabi basted tuna steaks with broiled zucchini

Here is how I made the soup (it is way yummy):

    • 2 cans pure pumpkin
    • 3 cans black beans drained and rinsed
    • 2 cups broth
    • 1 can crushed tomatoes in puree with basil
    • 3 palms curry powder
    • salt & pepper
    • dollop of greek yogurt, splash of almond milk

Blend will with the immersion blender - it's only one point per cup and in a world where I get 19 points a day ... every point counts.

I don't think anyone read my flu article yesterday - it is a good article on how to prevent the flu and it debunks the wear a mask and you're fine myth.

LOML has gone for a nap after another disappointing day of football.

Tips to Avoid the H1N1 (Swine) Flu

    Dr. Vinay Goyal.

Dr. Vinay Goyal is an MBBS, DRM, DNB (Intensivist and Thyroid specialist) having clinical experience of over 20 years. He has worked in institutions like Hinduja Hospital, Bombay Hospital, Saifee Hospital, Tata Memorial etc. Presently, he is heading the Nuclear Medicine Department and Thyroid clinic at Riddhi Vinayak Cardiac and Critical Centre, Malad, India.

In August, 2009, he gave a lecture in Molokai, Hawaii, about the H1N1 (Swine) Flu. These are some of the points he made:

    1. The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it’s almost impossible not coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions.

    2. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.

    3. Face masks or N95 respirators will not protect against H1N1.

    4. Tamiflu does not kill the virus, but does prevent further proliferation.

    5. While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):

    1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).

    2. “Hands-off-the-face” approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face except to eat or bathe.

    3. Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don’t trust salt). H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don’t underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

    4. Clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water, using a Neti Pot or swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water. This is very effective in bringing down the viral population.

    5. Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C. If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

    6. Drink as much of warm liquids as you can. Drinking warm liquids like tea and coffee has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive.

These suggestions are especially important for the young, so pass this on to your kids and grandkids. The older population will have some immunity. However, it doesn’t hurt for the rest of us to follow these guidelines too!!

  • Wandering around Xangatown

I'm doing some catching up with my Xanga friends today

    My prep is done:

    • sausage & pepper soup for Ronald McDonald House
    • Taco Chicken Soup for us
    • faux hummus
    • yogurt ranch salad dressing
    • broccoli cleaned, green beans cleaned
    • cauliflower, radishes, carrots and celery all clean and portioned for snacks
    • Steel cut oats are still cooking

The sausage and pepper soup - well we had a bunch of left over grilled brats from a fund raiser at work... I thought heck I can do something with those.  I picked up a bag of a dozen bell peppers from the Mennonite store and cleaned them then roasted them with some garlic and onion -- chopped it in my processor.

The soup is brats, roasted peppers, diced tomatoes, vegetable broth and some other stuff -- should work well.

I did a kicked up workout yesterday and today; I love that on Sat and Sun I don't have a time crunch.

I read an article that says if you sit on a balance ball while working (like in place of your office chair) it is a good core workout without really trying.  I want to try this - I think my boss would think I'm crazy, but I'm sure he will let me.

Kiwi is too full figured for her hot dog costume this year, but her cow still fits very well.  I have tried WW for Chihuahua's but LOML sneaks her treats.

I tried to blog on healthkicker (like I really need yet another place to keep up with) anyway it gets it's wires crossed and comes back here LOL ... a good sign that I shouldn't add any more blog locations.
